Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan citadel located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, South America. It was built in the 15th century and remained hidden from the outside world until its rediscovery by American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.

The citadel is located at an altitude of 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level and is situated on a high ridge between two mountains, Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. It is surrounded by steep cliffs and the Urubamba River runs through the valley below.

Machu Picchu is renowned for its impressive architecture, including its intricate stone walls, terraces, and temples. The site is divided into two main areas: the agricultural sector, which includes terraced fields and irrigation systems, and the urban sector, which contains religious and ceremonial structures, as well as living quarters.

The citadel was likely abandoned by the Inca people due to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, and its exact purpose and function are still a matter of speculation among archaeologists and historians. It is believed that Machu Picchu served as a royal estate for Inca Emperor Pachacuti and his family, as well as a pilgrimage site and center of worship for the Incan gods.
