Cusco – Km 104 – Inca Trail – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes
We will leave Cusco at 4:00 am to begin our adventure on the Short Inca Trail. After a 1.5-hour drive to Ollantaytambo, we will board the train to kilometer 104, the starting point of our hike.
During this journey, we will cover the most beautiful stretch of the Classic Inca Trail, visit impressive Inca archaeological sites, observe a wide variety of flora and fauna, and enjoy the spectacular views of the Andes.
The hike is approximately 10 km, starting in the Sacred Valley and ascending along an ancient paved Inca trail to the archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna. After exploring the site, we will enjoy a box lunch (picnic-style lunch).
After lunch, we will continue walking through the cloud forest, a vibrant environment where we can see orchids, exotic flowers, birds, and, with a bit of luck, some mammals like vizcachas (similar to chinchillas) or the elusive spectacled bear.
In the afternoon, we will reach the famous Sun Gate (Inti Punku), from where we will get our first panoramic view of Machu Picchu, perfect for taking photos with magical light and fewer tourists around.
From Inti Punku, we will descend for about 45 minutes to reach the Machu Picchu citadel. Once there, we will head to the classic viewpoint to take the famous postcard picture of the site in a peaceful and special moment.
Next, our professional guide will give a 2-hour guided tour of the most important areas of Machu Picchu, including temples, enclosures, and plazas.
At the end, we will take the bus to Aguas Calientes, where we will enjoy a dinner included, and then board the train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, our private transport will be waiting to take you back to Cusco, with an estimated arrival around 11:00 pm.
